Who are Pentatonix?

Pentatonix, or PTX as they’re more often known, is a five-member American a cappella group based in Arlington, Texas. There’s Scott Hoying (baritone lead/harmony), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo-soprano lead/harmony), Mitch Grassi (counter-tenor lead/harmony), Kevin Olusola (tenor/percussion), and Matt Sallee (tenor/percussion) (bass). Avi Kaplan used to be a part of the band, however in 2017, he was replaced by Sallee.

After forming in 2011, Pentatonix went on to win the third season of NBC’s The Sing-Off, earning themselves $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music. But the label quickly dropped them.

Later, on February 11, 2016, they signed with RCA records, and their second album, That’s Christmas to Me, was certified double platinum. As of 2014, it was the fourth best-selling album in the United States and the highest-charting holiday record by a group since 1962.

Pentatonix’s self-titled debut album, which featured mostly original material, topped the US Billboard 200 chart upon its initial release the following year.

Pentatonix has won three Grammys, including the first two ever given to an a cappella group for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella, and Best Country Duo/Group Performance, both in 2017.
